empathize

As a biology teacher, i noticed some of my students are having trouble in understanding animal and plant cells. For example, they always mistakenly describe different characteristic on a different type of cells. some of them told me that not having the cell authentically makes them hard to differentiate which one is which. Even though they have seen it under microscope, it does not help them to gain a better understanding of the subject.

define

According to Technopedia, Augmented reality (AR) is a type of interactive, reality-based display environment that takes the capabilities of computer generated display, sound, text and effects to enhance the user’s real-world experience. This will help to provide the students with a more realistic experience. Augmented reality combines real and computer-based scenes and images to deliver a unified but enhanced view of the world. In this way, the students can broaden their senses and also gain a better understanding of the topic.

Augmented reality has many different implementation models and applications, but its primary objective is to provide a rich audiovisual experience. AR works by employing computerized simulation and techniques such as image and speech recognition, animation, head-mounted and hand-held devices and powered display environments to add a virtual display on top of real images and surroundings.

In teaching biology, we can show the students a 3-D model of a certain topic that requires them to imagine. AR is going to make the learning more fun and interactive.

ideate

The anecdote of this activity is to enhance their imagination and to provide the students with an alternative ways to learn biology in a more fun and interactive ways.

Promoting young children with colors and moving object will stimulate their sense and heighten their curiosity.

Secondary school

Providing the students with a 3-D model for their learning activity will scaffold their understanding and gain deeper understanding.

prototype

The prototype of this activity will be as follows:

After finish with AR session, the students are required to have a short discussion among their member to see whether AR can promote a better learning for them. For example, they would have to draw and labelled all of the components within the animal and plant cells.

test

As an end result, the teacher test students’ understanding by giving them a short test and try to describe what are the components of the animal and plant cells. This will, later on, reflect into their daily problem-solving task as well.
